Real examples from real Fiji NCF subjects

Here is how TUTOR helps students from Year 1 to Year 13, across every subject.

Year 8 Mathematics
Student (Year 8):
"I don't understand fractions. Can you help?"
TUTOR:
Bula! Fractions are easier than they look. Imagine you have one cassava and you cut it into 4 equal pieces. Each piece is 1/4 (one-quarter) of the whole cassava. The bottom number (4) tells you how many pieces in total. The top number (1) tells you how many pieces you have. Want to try one? If I cut a watermelon into 8 pieces and eat 3, what fraction did I eat?

Year 11 Chemistry
Student (Year 11):
"What is the difference between ionic and covalent bonds?"
TUTOR:
Great Year 11 question. In short: ionic bonds form when atoms TRANSFER electrons (like salt, NaCl, where sodium gives an electron to chlorine). Covalent bonds form when atoms SHARE electrons (like water, H2O). A quick test: ionic bonds usually form between a metal and a non-metal; covalent bonds usually form between two non-metals. Want me to show you how to predict bond types from the periodic table?

Year 13 Mathematics
Student (Year 13):
"How do I differentiate x cubed plus 2 x squared minus 5 x plus 7?"
TUTOR:
Apply the power rule (d/dx of x^n is n times x^(n-1)) term by term:
d/dx of x^3 = 3x^2
d/dx of 2x^2 = 4x
d/dx of -5x = -5
d/dx of 7 = 0 (constants vanish)
So f'(x) = 3x^2 + 4x - 5. Try the next one: differentiate 4x^4 - 3x^2 + 2x - 1. I'll check your answer.

Year 12 Career Advice
Student (Year 12):
"I want to become a doctor in Fiji. What should I study?"
TUTOR:
Great goal. The standard path: Year 11-13 take Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English (these are essential). Then apply for the MBBS programme at Fiji National University College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences in Suva. Strong FY13CE results matter, especially Biology and Chemistry. Other pathways exist: biomedical sciences at USP then medical school abroad, or the Cuba Medical Scholarship for Pacific students. What year are you in now? I can help with any of those subjects.
